G:Y.E.L.L. 2011 - weekend one!

So I spent the weekend with some new friends at CHQ (17-19 Buckingham Palace Road! I know that address off by heart at the minute), here's a quick run-down of what happened!

Got the train to Leicester on Friday, spent the afternoon and evening with mum and Ian, chatting, catching up, not working! Then after a good nights sleep in my own bed, I got up and travelled the rest of the way to London, joined unexpectedly by some people I know from home. Got to St. Pancras and made my way to the tube station, and eventually got to Victoria. Had a wander up and down Buckingham Palace Road, got a bit wet, went to CHQ, raided the shop for two new lovely pieces of uniform (so excited!) and then headed up to the 5th floor to meet people!

Basically what's happening is: The WAGGGS (world association of girl guides and girl scouts) world conference is taking place in Edinburgh this year, and along side each World Conference, there is a youth event. G:UK (in the form of Rachel and Ruth who are the overall leaders of the event) decided that the youth event this year should be run by the guides themselves. As these are 6   13 year old girls who have had not that much experience of camps, and even less experience of running a camp, there are 6 senior section members, acting as mentors for the girls, hopefully to give them a bit of guidance, a bit of a push to get things organised, and support whenever they need it.

The camp is less of a camp, and more of a residential. We're staying in the Edinburgh YHA (This one, I think), and our indoor activities will be taking place in The Halls. We're also going climbing, having a day out in Edinburgh itself, and popping along to the World Conference occasionally (including taking part in the Opening Ceremony!). The theme that the guides have chosen is Love You, and there are going to be a variety of workshops throughout the week, aiming to build the girls confidence and self-esteem. I think that's all I'm going to say about what we've actually planned so far - can't give it all away!

At the weekend in CHQ, we all got Media Trained, so we can give successful interviews to any journalists that come our way (hopefully!) as well as some planning and generally getting to know the girls! It was a great weekend, and I really got on with all the SS members, and the guides themselves! My guide mentee (C) and I are organising the evening activities and opening and closing ceremonies - brilliant job!

Next stop: Edinburgh in June for our second weekend, then Edinburgh in July for the camp itself! Excited!! But first: Dissertation time, much less exciting!
